Middleton St Mary's CE (VC) Primary School

Welcome to Year 6

Welcome to Year 6! This is your child's final year at Middleton St Mary's and I'm sure you'd like to support us in making this as memorable as possible.

We hope that your child really enjoys Year 6. Whilst it is a very demanding year in primary schools and sometimes children feel under pressure, we will try to support you and your child the best we can. Remember that you can come and speak to any one of us after school if you are worried or concerned about anything. The only evening that we might be unable to speak to you is on a Wednesday as we have to be in a staff meeting. If you are unable to speak in person, please call the school office and arrange an appointment/phone call back after school.

Year 6, being the final year of primary school, is the year that your child will sit the Key Stage 2 SATs.  These tests happen in May and will assess your child's attainment in Maths, Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar (SPaG) and Reading.  We do plenty of practice for the tests so that your child feels confident and less nervous in May.

In Year 6, we continue to have a heavy focus on our non-negotiables for writing as in the previous years.  These are aspects of grammar and punctuation that your child will have learnt in previous years which they MUST use for their writing to be correct.  It is expected that before your child leaves primary school they are consistently able to write with accuracy.   We encourage children to check for accuracy every time they write and make it clear that it is 'non-negotiable' for these areas to be correct. Please encourage your child to do the same at home for homework tasks so that it becomes second nature.

If you'd like any further information or support, please don't hesitate to contact any member of the Year 6 team.  We look forward to working with you and your children!

Miss D Owen, Miss S Johnston and Miss C Barnard.

Important Days

PE

All classes have outdoor PE on Wednesdays. Please ensure that your child has appropriate PE kit (navy or black shorts/jogging bottoms/leggings and t-shirts, not football shirts).

All Year 6 classes will have gymnastics in the hall on a Thursday. We will provide the house t-shirts and children will need to bring in their black or navy shorts.

Useful Websites to Support your Child's Learning

Remember, the best way to support your child with reading is to listen to them read and to read to them as often as possible. Below are links to some useful websites that can also support your child's learning. For further suggestions and support, please don't hesitate to speak to one of the team.

BBC Bitesize

Purple Mash

TTRockstars

We also recommend you download the 'Talk Share Learn Leeds' App which will give you some practical and fun ways to develop your child's speaking and listening.

Reading

It is really important that children read every day at home and in school. We expect ALL children to bring their reading book, signed reading diary, spelling book and homework folder to school each day in their book bag. In Key Stage 2, as children become more confident at reading, they will read books that have a QR code. The books can be quizzed on once the book has been read by logging into Accelerated Reader and entering their user name and password.
